Is being "normal" – whatever that means to you – a good, thing, or a bad thing? Neither?

What is normal? Normal seems to be a general consensus of what is acceptable and that can be limiting at times. At one time, it was normal to think that the Earth was flat or that the sun revolved around the Earth. In some circles it is normal to think that evolution is wrong and creationism is normal. So I don't quite give normal the same amount of respect as I do to facts, opinions and theories. There are some instances where I prefer the "abby normal" over the normal. Ever since I saw the movie "Young Frankenstein" and Igor told Herr Doctor that the name of brain that Igor had stolen was Abby, Abby Normal, I can't think of abnormal in the same way.

Can one also think of normal as average or mediocre? If that is the case, would anyone want to be considered normal? Wouldn't one want to be considered special in that instance?

I would have to say that I am fairly normal; I can safely say without bragging that I have an above average aptitude for academics, an above average talent for cooking and perhaps a slightly above average ability with gardening, but in the grand scheme of things that is neither here nor there. What is really important is that I try to make the most of what I have in this life and if what I do fulfills me and those who are the most important to me. Hopefully it all gets paid forward into the greater good somehow in the end.
