I have to say that I was excited about having Iceland as a pit stop, I have read so many great things about this country. It has a tremendous record on women rights, it all began with their 1975 lady strike, women both at work and at home went on strike and the menfolk quickly got the message. They were one of the first to elect a female president and as of present day politics, they have far more women leaders than we do here in the United States. Moreover, it is a fascinating country to explore with all of its volcanoes, mountains and coastline.
I was a little disappointed with both of my layovers because I didn’t get to see anything other than the outside of an airport and these all look alike. The first time, my layover was from 4:30 to 6:30 in the morning, I couldn’t even see anything outside and the second time, I was running through the terminal, late from the first flight, trying to board the second flight. So all I have to present to you from my time in Iceland are these pictures from my window seat. At least the sky was pretty spectacular in terms of cloud formations competing with the sun, I thought it was pretty grand from my viewpoint.
I think Icelandair lets you spend up to 2 days in Iceland as a layover so you can get a taste of the place. The airport is kind of in the middle of nowhere. The closest thing if you have a layover (and you bathing suit handy) is the Blue Lagoon. It is fun to sit and soak. Next trip, right?
Iceland is now on the bucket list, I met a French lady on the shuttle bus going over to Paris, we took the shuttle from the terminal to the plane and she had spent three extraordinary weeks, she couldn’t stop raving about it. So I was sold. π
We went a few years ago and were impressed. The flight was not bad in terms of cost but the hotel, food and car rental were a bit much. Look for ways to economize.
Thanks for the tip π
We stayed in a guest house on Reykjavik instead of a hotel and saved quite a bit. And it was great.
Icelanders are known to be exceedingly friendly, they are issuing open invitations to Syrian refugees. π
Really? That is great. Good for them.

It’s a pity that you didn’t have the chance to visit the Island. Your photos already give a good impression of how amazing Iceland is! π
Thanks for the compliment! I am looking forward to another chance to actually visit more than the airport. π
Hi Laurie, very much enjoyed your pictures of Iceland, and your story about women rights, very interesting.
Kate.
Thanks Kate!
Oh well. Maybe another time. We were trying to go to Iceland for a weekend, but the flights make it impossible to go for the weekend. That’s why we ended up in Amsterdam last year. So many interesting places to go.
I know π
