Describe your personal style, however you’d like to interpret that — your clothing style, your communication style, your hair style, your eating style, anything.
The daily prompt’s title is deceptive if you are someone like me, a person who lacks fashion or style sense, I am no style icon, not now, not ever. My style is comfort; comfortable clothes, easy hair, easy skin care, no makeup, comfortable shoes, regimented eating style, I’m not too sure how to describe my communication style, my hands play an important role, as well as my eyes, but I find I communicate better with the written word over verbal style.

However, when I think Style Icon, I think Ines de la Fressange, Victoria Beckham, Eva Mendez, these are ladies who excite me about clothes because they use fashion as a tableau.

In the real world, my daughter is a style icon, she puts outifts together so effortlessly, not only for herself, but for others as well. I’ll never forget the time she took me shopping ten years ago, she was all of 11 years old, but you would have thought her to be a 30 year old professional shopper. She picked out 9 seperate pieces that were mixed and matched, in effect creating so many different looks. Her gift was evident way before that shopping trip, she was the queen of the fashion runway in our home, I got to watch her fashion shows during her two’s and three’s, they were so creative and adorable. I still rely on her fashion sense to dress me when I’m to go out to somewhere fancy, she has an excellent eye for fashion and style.

I wanted to exercise today while I was waiting for my hubby so I walked for a bit and I saw a pretty building that had open stairs, I walked up five flights and got to the rooftop where I had such beautiful vistas all 360 around me. It was a truly glorious view, the autumn colors and the buildings, the landmarks and everything. I also have a confession to make; ever since my baby girl told me that I should get a real camera because I have a great eye for taking pictures, I have been looking for beautiful things to photograph. I never thought that I took good pictures but when my daughter said that to me and I trust her judgement and her taste. She has excellent fashion and decorating taste, not to mention a fabulous sense of style. She definitely doesn’t get it from me and I am grateful that she got it from somewhere. Being a girl was difficult for me because I never felt comfortable dressing up or wearing makeup because I never felt it, put me in pants, gorgeous men’s style shoes and an easy to care for hair style and I am so happy. My mother and my sister just know how to be feminine, I don’t. Anyway if my baby girl says I have an eye for photography then I believe her. 🙂

How important are clothes to you? Describe your style, if you have one, and tell us how appearance impacts how you feel about yourself.

Clothes are very important for a variety of reasons. In my opinion clothes first and foremost cover up and protect the body from the elements, they also provide privacy from others. These are the two most basic reasons for clothes, yet clothes provide even more than that to so many people. What is the saying? Clothes make the man? There is something enticing about a man in a well tailored suit, with a beautiful colored dress shirt and a strong pattern in the tie. The suit should also be of an elegant fabric, a fabric that hangs well on the body.

I love clothes on others, I especially love architectural designs that I see at the fashion shows when the House of Chanel unveils its creations. I also appreciate Victoria Beckham as a designer, I love strong lines and structured shapes. Hermes is another fashion house that has my attention each time I see a clip of their shows.

Having said all this, for myself, clothes aren’t important in the sense that I dress for fashion. I dress for comfort, to look neat and tidy and to be warm. I don’t have the eye necessary to figure out what suits me and what makes me look attractive. I am too judgmental on myself so when I am in the dressing room, I don’t see the good points to an outfit, I see that it makes my legs look fat, or the pants on too snug even if they aren’t, I say snug when they are fitted and should be, this constant drone in my head when I have to go clothes shopping makes shopping a huge chore. That is why I consider myself the luckiest lady in the world because my hubby loves shopping and he especially loves to buy me nice clothes. Which helps me very much because when he takes me with him to a client’s dinner, I can go feeling comfortable in the knowledge that I am wearing a pretty dress that he picked out and I look pretty in his eyes.

When you were 16, what did you think your life would look like? Does it look like that? Is that a good thing?

My best memory of my sixteenth year was the day of my birthday. We were in Venice, Italy and my parents, my little sister and I spent the day roaming the city, taking a gondola ride and that night we had the most delicious meal at a small Italian restaurant. I remember the restaurant well because it was empty, except for the female waiters and us, I remember feeling a little ill at ease because the waiters seemed at a loss as to what to do with us, we were there to eat so early. I thought at one point that the ladies were going to come over and feed us, they wanted to serve us so badly and keep occupied. If ever you eat out in Italy, don’t go until eight or nine at night; don’t go at seven, the waiters won’t know what to do with you. It was a fantastic meal, I know that. I remember the first course because it was a seafood salad served in a gorgeous seashell standing up on the plate. I know that it was sublime but that is all that I remember of the restaurant. I remember leaving the restaurant. On the way out as I was following my parents, I felt eyes following me and I turned around and there was a handsome Italian sailor smiling at me, my mother rained on my parade when she took my hand and pulled me with her in the opposite direction. I got a chance to smile and wave at him and he blew me a kiss. I remember what I was wearing, I was wearing red sandals and a very pretty white dress with a red belt around the waist, the neck line had beautiful embroidery all around it. I felt quite pretty that day. Overall I would rate it as one of my favorite birthday memories.

As to the question of what I dreamed of becoming when I grew up, I am pretty sure that I was still planning to go into medicine at that time. I had always wanted to be a surgeon, ever since I was a little girl and that hadn’t changed until the year where I developed an essential tremor in my hands, at sixteen. The same year that I took chemistry and hated it and the same year that I became ultra-rebellious. I stopped planning for a career in surgery and I felt a little unmoored for that whole year. I didn’t get back on track until my senior year of high school. I had a lot of anger during my junior year in high school for a lot of reasons.

I’ll get back to this story some other time, I have a headache right now and it has been plaguing me for two days now. This story needs to be told headache free. On a happy note, Venice is truly a city to visit. I absolutely loved it!

Favorite Piece of Art

Degas dancer from back

There are a few that I have narrowed down, I love sculpture and Rodin was a genius and I adore the Thinker. I love adore Degas’s paintings of the ballet students. Degas also made the bronze statue of the young ballerina. Degas really captured the grace and beauty of those young ballerina’s, the beauty tugs at your heart, you feel the painter’s loneliness when he paints them from a hidden place.

Say What?!

Camden Town, London, UK – May 2005 – Patrick Nouhailler ©

I had a colorful tee-shirt that I had purchased in Camden market in London, it had bold blue and bright red and vibrant green. The acronym S.W.A.P.O was blazoned across the colors. I knew that it stood for South West Africa Peace Organization, when I purchased the shirt Apartheid was still in existence. I was back home in New York City walking down Park Avenue South when a business man stopped me with his hand and he called me a stupid bitch. I was so shocked that I told him to leave me alone and that I can wear what I want and tore my arm away. I was shaken by the vehemence of the whole encounter.
