My dear friend Mary, left me a lovely surprise on our breezeway just the other morning, three pots of primroses, with the sweetest card. We are essentially planning to put these in the garden come this Spring, my challenge is to keep them alive and healthy from now until then, not much pressure don’t you think ;)?

In Norse legend the Primrose was Freya’s flower and stood for young love, moreover, the primrose was also seen to represent the woman. The petals on the blossom stood for the various stages of life – birth, initiation, followed by consummation. Then there’s repose and in the end, death. I think when it is all taken together in context, Mary chose very well, we are all involved in the circle of life, some do it prettier than others and the Primrose most definitely does it delicately and sweetly. I can’t wait to plant them with Mary this Spring, we are going to have a nice time planting together.

The best advice I ever received regarding plants

Even though I have been gardening for about twelve years or so, I still consider myself a novice. I am always learning and adapting to new techniques and advice. The best advice that I have ever received was from one of my best friends and she helped me pick some great perennials. Her advice was to get perennials that self seed and self propagate; the reasoning behind her advice was based on several factors: economy, growth and sustainability.

I have many plants in my garden that you have seen through the course of my many picture sharings and so you have seen specimens of my dear friends great advice.

The best plants to fill up your garden with are the tall phlox, the cone flowers in all of their colors, hostas and lilies. You can divide them up without worrying about hurting them because they are very hardy and on their own they will do you the favor of multiplying all by their lonesome.

Today my hubby, the baby boy and I went for a nice drive in the countryside towards Great Barrington, the foliage was magnificent to look at, when we got to Great Barrington, I walked past a beautiful garden and I knew that I had to take a picture to remember it for myself so that I can keep that inspiration for next spring when it comes to planting time. What I had seen is precisely what I had imagined for my garden to look like as a “finished” project, not that a garden is ever finished. My job is to find out what plants those are and make it a point to get them for next year starting in May. I may not be able to plant them until June but at least I’ll be able to keep them in the garage until I am ready to plant them.

Pretty isn’t it, that is exactly what I want for the front of my house during the autumn season, one of these years I might get there with proper planning, care, maintenance and patience.

I am not planting my new plants today, as soon as we got them home, I watered them and that’s it until Monday. I was serious when I said that I wasn’t going to do anything physical until Monday. I need to rest, I let myself get way too fatigued this week. Just getting the plantings put a smile on my face, the thought of putting them in my planters in the front of the house is exciting, the planters will be so pretty with the colors yellow and green peeping out from the top.
