Mother's day, postaday2016

Happy Mother’s Day to all of my friends and family, I hope each mom gets spoiled on her special day. As you can see, I have been spoiled in roses, I love the colors, my favorite ones are the orange tinted roses, they came as such a surprise accompanied by my husband’s card that brought tears to my eyes, the words are so touching.

Today, I am getting my favorite present, time spent with our children, the whole point of Mother’s Day. I consider myself very lucky with our two children, they have grown up into fine young adults, I am so proud of them just for being who they are, I love just talking to them, they are fun to talk to, always something to say and something to teach me about technology and the new things happening in music, entertainment, politics and social issues.

My husband is going to cook, so we are going to eat very well because he is a wonderful cook, I would even go as far as to say he would go far on any cooking show, he has that talent of being able to go into the refrigerator or the pantry and come up with ingredients perfect for an excellent dish. I don’t have that talent, I need the structure of a recipe, at least as a guide, I would get chopped so fast on any of those cooking shows. LOL

Today is going to be a lovely day. I am very lucky on so many levels, I try to remember that each and every day.

Happy Mother’s Day

This is my mother and this picture just happens to be one of my favorite of the both of us together and it dovetails nicely as a follow up to the post that I wrote yesterday. I wrote about how wonderful the day had been and that it reminded me of days past when my mother and I would spend a lot of time together; going to the movies, talking, going food shopping together and other stuff. Yesterday was a nice present for me as well because Mother’s Day isn’t only about celebrating our mother’s but it is about the celebration of the relationship between the child and its mother. I was lucky enough to get my celebration with my mother and some wonderful alone time with her to boot. There definitely isn’t any other bond quite like the bond between mother and child; I am lucky to still have mine.

So Happy Mother’s Day everyone!

cheesecake, dogs, Mother's day, New York, parks, postaday2013, wisteria

The babies, my hubby, Jack and I hopped in the car and we all descended on to New York City to see my mother and sister and her family. I traveled with the cheesecake in the front seat, it traveled well as did Jack, he was in the front seat with me as well.lol The only tough thing about being in the city with Jack is the whole going to the bathroom thing. He’s a country dog and there isn’t enough country in New York to meet his requirements, not to mention the intense distractions all around, it makes his bathroom experience a little stressful. This won’t put a damper on our visit, I will just have to walk him long enough and far enough where he won’t have a choice but to go to the bathroom, it will be far from the indications of earlier today. Good exercise for both of us, that’s the bright side that I need to keep in mind.

Happy news on the baking front, my mother broke down and asked me to cut her a sliver of cheesecake tonight and she loved it. She couldn’t wait until Sunday, hee, hee. That made me happy, just knowing that someone really enjoys what I have made them makes my day. It fills me with much happiness. Hooray for me.:)

Tomorrow is an open book, we have the whole city as our oyster. We can visit uptown, downtown, Eastside or Westside or a mixture of each.

My stomach is so full from all the sushi we had this evening at a new Japanese restaurant not far from my mother’s house. The occasion was to celebrate the coming end of baby boy’s college education and sushi is his favorite. I have one big belly, it will gradually go down tonight. It’s only fish and rice, all good going down and so good for you on top of it.

I hope that Jack gets used to New York, it will make his life easier and mine too. He does get the “aw he’s so cute” looks everywhere we go and he has had fun chasing the fat squirrels in the park. I don’t worry for the squirrels, they are extremely savvy and no country dog on a leash will ever catch one. Jack sure does like trying.

A look back into familial history

family bonds, family ties, Mother's day, postaday2013, present

My hubby has already started to spoil me for Mother’s Day. He knows how much I love history in any form and he went to ancestry.com to find out more about my family history. I filled everything out, did the DNA test and shipped it out so when I find out anything, you know that I’ll be writing about it. I think that it’s fascinating to know from whence you came if you are able to find out. I’m excited!!

I know that unlike the celebrities who were featured on the t.v show Who Are You hosted and researched by a Harvard Ph.d academic, I forget his name, whose ancestors all seem to be either famous or important, I’m sure that my family will be ordinary to anyone else but special to me because they are mine.

There are some things that I already know about my family; one grandparent was born in Liverpool, one was born in Paris, another was born in Angouleme France and the fourth was born in Bourg, France. So that is three grandparents from France and one from Great Britain, but perhaps it isn’t as cut and dried as all that. There could have been journeys farther back in time, anything is possible.

I look forward to this journey back in time, I’m very lucky to have a hubby who likes to spoil me.

birthday, May, middle spring, Mother's day, postaday2013

Today is May7th and tomorrow is my niece’s birthday, she is turning ten, a wonderful age for little girls. This coming weekend is Mother’s Day and we are all going to my mother’s house and then over to my sister’s to celebrate both my niece’s birthday and Mother’s Day. We will have a great time, there is no doubt of that, we are bringing Jack and I’m pretty sure that my niece and nephew are going to be really happy to see little Jack. Who wouldn’t be happy to see our adorable little Jack Russell?

The age old question whenever birthdays and other special days come around crops up. What do you get your niece who has quite a bit and what do you get your mother who also celebrates a birthday later in the month? The good part of buying for a ten year old girl is that you don’t have to bother with toys much anymore; clothing and jewelry, like small earrings, works very well as presents.

My mother on the other hand is getting trickier. I know that she wants cedar mulch for her garden but I would like to get her something else as well, so I am going to make a New York style cheesecake for the weekend, cheesecake is her favorite or at least one of her favorite’s. When I say trickier, all that means is, that after a while, you stop needing or even wanting new things and it gets difficult to think of ideas for your kids to get you.

My mother might not be too happy getting her cheesecake because she gets all concerned about gaining weight, so hopefully between all of us, we won’t leave my mother with too many extra pieces. She doesn’t have anything to worry in the weight department but you can’t tell her otherwise, she’ll explain to whoever asks, she doesn’t have to worry about weight problems because she is so careful on a daily basis. The intricacies of family. I think that despite all of her complaining, she will be very happy on the inside about the cheesecake and the mulch, she might even get a new plant to go with her mulch, that will definitely make her happy.

Great Barrington, Mother's day, postaday2012, Restaurant, sushi

This past Mother’s day, the kids and my hubby treated me to a wonderful lunch at Bizen, an excellent Japanese restaurant in Great Barrington, MA in the midst of the Berkshires. It’s a great town, full of life, food and cultural events. I forget how my hubby found Bizen, we stumbled upon it about three years ago and we have been faithful customers ever since. Our son is a sushi aficionado and our baby girl has also become more adventurous as she has gotten older. My hubby did us all a favor when he found Bizen because it is perfect for those who like to be adventurous, they offer monkfish liver as an appetizer, their versions of shumai, steamed dumplings, are sublime and their creative riff on nega maki, usually sautéed beef around asparagus, in this case a lovely sliced duck breast grilled around asparagus is excellent. My hubby and baby boy ordered the Chef’s sushi special which always means the chef offers what he feels to be the best picks of the day. My baby girl and I got very excited perusing the special inside out rolls with their clever names. The baby girl ordered a puff dragon, a roll with smoked eel, salmon, tuna, avocado rolled with tobiko, flying fish roe. I ordered the binge on the fringe which had spicy tuna tartare, avocado, smoked eel, and other stuff. It was soooo good. We were all sated with the savory part of our meal, dessert was forthcoming but not at Bizen. Down the street was an old fashioned ice cream parlor, I got a large cookies and cream in a waffle cone, the baby girl had chocolate in a cup, my hubby indulged with black raspberry ice cream and the baby boy got a shake. It was a great Mother’s day, great food and being with my family, doesn’t get better than that.
