lilies, postaday2016

This post has become an annual affair, ever since my mother had her front yard professionally landscaped, I have written about the unlikely bloom of the lilies I had planted for my mother, a Mother’s Day present, prior to the landscaper, who had demolished all of the old plants to give way to his vision. My lilies had triumphed despite his best efforts, coming back year after year, bigger and better.

This year I got another surprise, the white lilies made their first appearance, the previous two or three years, I was so excited by the yellow and burgundy lilies that I made no mention of the other lily bulbs that I had planted that one summer, this year I suppose the bulbs finally recovered from the trauma from the landscaper’s digging that they were able to show themselves. Aren’t they beautiful?

There is something so miraculous and cool when nature rewards you with a present. These gorgeous day lilies are a new addition to my garden and I didn’t buy or plant them. They just appeared this year, thanks to the birds I think, could it be something else, wind, chipmunk, squirrel, butterfly or bee? I don’t know and who am I to look a gifthorse in the mouth, mine is not to question but to be thankful, at least in this instance. They are so sleek and elegant, a nice change from the more traditional tiger lilies I have everywhere.

I have more zucchini blossoms. I also bought more vegetable plants, now I have Kohl Rabi, brussel sprouts, celery plus more peppers and tomatoes. My small patch of blackberries are starting to ripen along with my wild strawberries near the pool. Things are happening in the Nichols garden, very exciting.

Hooray, my lilies survived the turmoil!

Yesterday when my mother and I came back from our mini walking tour, I stopped short at the bottom of my mother’s stoop because out of the corner of my eye, I spied evidence of lilies, which in all honesty should not have been there, because the professional landscaper from last year had “stripped the soil of all previous inhabitants” and replaced everything with all new plants. Those lilies had been a Mother’s Day Gift and I was a little sad to see them go without ever once seeing them in bloom. Mother Nature apparently decided otherwise and my lily bulbs surivived the turmoil and clung to life as stubbornly as possible. They stayed exactly where I had planted them last May, I am so excited to see them in bloom in a few weeks, partly because I have forgotten what color I chose and also because I think that it is so cool that they hung in there despite all the odds against their survival.

Aside from the “discarded” plants determination to not go quietly into the night, I think that the professional landscaper did a very nice job and my mother’s garden is very elegant and beautiful. I am happy with the results and so is she.

I was given two beautiful bouquets and I normally don’t go crazy for cut flowers, but these two are absolutely gorgeous. The roses smell as roses should, floral and sweet while the lilies are making me smile with their sunny colors and delicate petals.

The lilies reminded me of all of the lilies that I used to have, both in my front garden and in the back near the pool; that is until our army of chipmunks found out that my lily bulbs were very tasty and since that day, they have eaten all of my lilies no matter how many times I had replaced them so after a while I stopped planting lily bulbs. So having this beautiful bouquet made me smile because I miss seeing them up close and personal.
