Your life without a computer: what does it look like?

My life without computers would look very much like the way it did before computers came into my life. Essentially I would resume my pen pal correspondence to stay in touch with my WordPress friends, just because the computer has gone away doesn’t mean that my friendships drift away into the ether. I have made important friendships and they are valuable to me so I would never mind resuming the ancient art of letter writing, lol.

Before the computers shut down I would make sure to have printed out the complete 450 pages of my unfinished novel in progress “The Chic Bootlegger” so that I can resume either writing it in long hand or typing it on our old typewriter. I don’t need a computer to finish it, I just need my imagination, my fingers and the discipline to sit down long enough to type the remaining story of Madeleine and her adventures.

The only thing that would sadden me about the loss of computers and the internet would be the loss of my political blog “A Progressive’s Thoughts”. I read and comment on a daily basis at the Huffington Post and I cross post it to my blog and I often get immediate reactions, both negative and positive to my political opinions, it is very addicting. The immediacy of other’s opinions in response to mine is unlike anything that I have ever known and it would be hard for me to give it up. I would have to work really hard to get the same reaction the old fashioned way. I suppose that it could be done, the question is do I have the intestinal fortitude to be able to do it? Well thankfully, at least I don’t have to worry about being forced to try, as far as I know the internet will continue to be with us for a long time into the future.

What did you do before the Internet?

  • Remember the days before you got the Internet at home?

  • Before the Internet
  • internet explorer

Before the Internet, my two children were small so I was more than busy with taking care of them, watching over them and running after them. They are exactly two and a half years apart so I was never bored, did I mention that we also had a puppy at the same time when my daughter was nine months and my son had just turned three. There wasn’t any time for the Internet. When we did get it, it was dial up and that was when they were in school so it wasn’t as gratifying as it is nowadays with DSL. Back then during the days of dial up, I didn’t have the patience to wait for the slow connection, I had only so much time to do everything that I needed to do while the kids were at school. Now that the kids don’t need me as much, I enjoy having the Internet because it provides a great vehicle for my writing, Plinky and WordPress.

What’s more important electricity or the Internet?

Electricity, internet, postaday2011

In my mind, I would say electricity is the more important because we wouldn’t have the Internet without the advent of electricity. I wonder if electricity would have been possible if we hadn’t had access to coal? Would someone have thought to use the power of the sun or the wind to generate power during that time period? What if running water, being used as a power source, had been explored further? We might be in a different place right now and who knows how that would have impacted the birth of the computer and then the Internet.

How would an alternate power source have inspired Steven Jobs? Someone told me that Steven Jobs took a year and toured China and Asia when he was younger. I wonder how that influenced him. The only policy of Apple’s that I disagreed with, was its out-sourcing manufacturing jobs to China. Our economy would have reaped some benefits if Apple had its manufacturing plants here. I know that the argument is that the product would have been out-priced as a result but there was something to Henry Ford’s philosophy, pay your workers enough so that they can afford to buy your own product. Steven Jobs could have perhaps put that philosophy back into practice. Goodness knows that there isn’t a corporation here in the U.S who believes in that ideal anymore. That is the only criticism, if only for providing more jobs for us here in this country.

Otherwise, Steven Jobs was a mind-boggling genius, I am fortunate to be the proud owner of the Ipad and I love my Ipad. I am not a tech person, I do not own an Ipod or an Iphone, I have a cell phone, I forget it at home or I forget to charge it, so I don’t really have a cell phone because I never use it. But I have the Ipad and I tell you that it is great. I check into WordPress and start my blog or I get into Huffington Post and keep my commentary going while being accessible to my family in the evenings. It is great, did I say that enough, that my Ipad is great. Well, it is.
