My husband took me to see Man from U.N.C.L.E the day after I got back, he hadn’t seen a movie since I left and he was itching for a movie, it is one of our favorite things to do together. It was the perfect choice of a movie; it had everything we love, great dialogue, action, amazing cars, Europe as the background, fantastic fashion and a great storyline. I forgot, the actors we love, Armie Hammer and Henry Cavill and who doesn’t adore Hugh Grant, the actresss was wonderful as well, we had not seen her before, but she was adorable. Did I mention the fashion, clothes to die for, Henry Cavill was dressed brilliantly, every man should have at least one of his suits in his wardrobe. The ladies were dressed to the hilt, I loved everything from the dresses to the shoes to the accessories. I loved this movie from start to finish, it was great!

Daily prompt: Style Icon

Describe your personal style, however you’d like to interpret that — your clothing style, your communication style, your hair style, your eating style, anything.
The daily prompt’s title is deceptive if you are someone like me, a person who lacks fashion or style sense, I am no style icon, not now, not ever. My style is comfort; comfortable clothes, easy hair, easy skin care, no makeup, comfortable shoes, regimented eating style, I’m not too sure how to describe my communication style, my hands play an important role, as well as my eyes, but I find I communicate better with the written word over verbal style.

However, when I think Style Icon, I think Ines de la Fressange, Victoria Beckham, Eva Mendez, these are ladies who excite me about clothes because they use fashion as a tableau.

In the real world, my daughter is a style icon, she puts outifts together so effortlessly, not only for herself, but for others as well. I’ll never forget the time she took me shopping ten years ago, she was all of 11 years old, but you would have thought her to be a 30 year old professional shopper. She picked out 9 seperate pieces that were mixed and matched, in effect creating so many different looks. Her gift was evident way before that shopping trip, she was the queen of the fashion runway in our home, I got to watch her fashion shows during her two’s and three’s, they were so creative and adorable. I still rely on her fashion sense to dress me when I’m to go out to somewhere fancy, she has an excellent eye for fashion and style.

Golden Globe awards and fashion

Last night my hubby and I watched the Golden Globe awards, we usually watch these award shows because it’s fun and we like to see our favorite actors hopefully win for their brilliant work. We were especially keeping our fingers crossed for Jennifer Lawrence, her work in American Hustle was incredible and she won! She is so adorable and her acceptance speech didn’t disappoint, it was precious. After she won, we kept watching because Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were doing an amazing job as hosts and we were still curious as to how other categories were going to be judged. Amy Adams won for American Hustle, we were very happy for her and for some reason I can’t remember some other award winners, I’ll just tell you about what I do remember. I remember that the director for Gravity won and I think he definitely deserved his award. American Hustle won for best Musical or Comedy and Woody Allen won the Cecil B DeMille Award for a lifetime achievement award.

So now to the fashion; personally I admire all of these stars who choose a dress, makeup and shoes knowing full well that every choice will be put under the microscope by fashionistas who are not kind. I would be so ill prepared, I realize that stylists are available, but even though all of these stars have them, it seems that even they can make grave faux pas in taste. Jennifer Lawrence for example has been criticized for her dress, there was even a meme on twitter. I didn’t mind her dress, I mean really, she is so lovely and adorable, she can wear just about anything and make it work, but regardless, her Christian Dior dress did not make the fashion police happy.

There was one dress that I loved and the glowing Kerry Washington was wearing it. She was so gorgeous, the dress draped her baby bump with grace and style and the color against her skin was perfect. The other dress that I fell in love with was the red architectural number that the supporting actress from 12 Years a Slave was wearing; it was majestic, stunning and everything that I could think of in a dress perfect for an awards ceremony. Olivia Wilde was the other actress who was dressed spectacularly, she is expecting and she was radiant in her full length green, sparkly dress.

I don’t know which would be more anxiety producing; the search for the dress, the day of the awards show, the awards ceremony itself or the day after when the verdict is in. I suppose that it’s more than just about what the public says about you, it is really all about the work, or so they say a lot and I hope for their sakes that it is all about the work or else they are simply torturing their egos for things that don’t matter, as in the fashion police’s opinions.

How important are clothes to you? Describe your style, if you have one, and tell us how appearance impacts how you feel about yourself.

Clothes are very important for a variety of reasons. In my opinion clothes first and foremost cover up and protect the body from the elements, they also provide privacy from others. These are the two most basic reasons for clothes, yet clothes provide even more than that to so many people. What is the saying? Clothes make the man? There is something enticing about a man in a well tailored suit, with a beautiful colored dress shirt and a strong pattern in the tie. The suit should also be of an elegant fabric, a fabric that hangs well on the body.

I love clothes on others, I especially love architectural designs that I see at the fashion shows when the House of Chanel unveils its creations. I also appreciate Victoria Beckham as a designer, I love strong lines and structured shapes. Hermes is another fashion house that has my attention each time I see a clip of their shows.

Having said all this, for myself, clothes aren’t important in the sense that I dress for fashion. I dress for comfort, to look neat and tidy and to be warm. I don’t have the eye necessary to figure out what suits me and what makes me look attractive. I am too judgmental on myself so when I am in the dressing room, I don’t see the good points to an outfit, I see that it makes my legs look fat, or the pants on too snug even if they aren’t, I say snug when they are fitted and should be, this constant drone in my head when I have to go clothes shopping makes shopping a huge chore. That is why I consider myself the luckiest lady in the world because my hubby loves shopping and he especially loves to buy me nice clothes. Which helps me very much because when he takes me with him to a client’s dinner, I can go feeling comfortable in the knowledge that I am wearing a pretty dress that he picked out and I look pretty in his eyes.

Hooray for Hollywood…..

Tonight is the Oscars and my hubby and I will be watching. We haven’t seen any of the movies up for the award but it doesn’t make it any less fun to watch. I’m curious how Seth McFarlane will do as the host. It is a hard hosting gig and he has big shoes to fill; Billy Crystal has done a tremendous job several times in the past and he is awfully adorable and lovable. Seth McFarlane on the other hand is famous or perhaps notorious for Family Guy and most recently “Ted” in the movies, his brand of humor is pushing the envelope towards the barriers of risqué and beyond. I’m looking forward to seeing all the fashions and the jewels as well. I hope that everyone who watches, enjoys it!

Nervous about tomorrow so I’m posting another snippet of my book in progress.

Tomorrow is my biopsy and I am nervous, I have a pit in my stomach so I am cheating and throwing out a bit of my novel for you to read. I hope that you enjoy it even though it comes out of context and is standing alone.

The weekend came and went without any fanfare. The same family rituals, Saturday morning we all go to the Marche, I spend all of Saturday helping Maman cleaning, cooking and baking. Gabrielle and the girls are out. Sunday we all eat together with Sabine and Hortense as usual. The only thing that keeps me from getting depressed when I see that life is always the same is that next weekend is the spectacle with Josephine Baker at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees. I need to make more plans because I feel as if life is passing me by and I’ll turn around one day and ask myself where time went.

It is finally time for our final fitting, Sabine and I race to her apartment and we see both silk dresses just waiting for us on the mannequins. “Oh my goodness Sabine, they are so beautiful! Hortense you are a fairy godmother.” I turn to Sabine “how did you not try your dress on until now? I couldn’t have waited.” Sabine says “I couldn’t because this is the first time that I have seen them up on the mannequins, Maman has been very secretive and I didn’t want to jinx the dresses anyway. Best to let the master seamstress work without being bothered, don’t you think?” “ Sabine you have more patience than I, but I’m so glad that you left your Maman alone because these are exquisite.”

Hortense comes out from her room carrying all the accessories and starts to tell us to undress so that she can begin the fittings. She says “I bought out all the costume jewelry and the sautoir and feathers so that you girls get a really good idea of what the final result will look like for Saturday night.” I said “Sabine why don’t you go first, I am dying to see you in that beautiful corn blue silk to see how your eyes look with the dress’s color” As Sabine put on the dress being very careful not to get stuck by any of the pins you can see that Hortense has made her dresses so often because it fit perfectly. It does pay to have a seamstress as a Maman. The dress was so simple, Sabine’s dress was just below the knee and she had two slits at the drop waist line so that when doing the Charleston her dress would go back and forth. Hortense had added right at the waist a belt of long shimmering fringe all around the dress that caught the light and moved with the dress, it looked so pretty. The dress was sleeveless and Sabine to dress up her arms had gotten ten bangles and a long rope of pearls to dress her neck up. She also purchased sparkly hair pins to catch the light all around her face. Sabine looked like a vision of elegance. “Sabine wait until Guillaume sees you; he is going to not let you out of his sight for a single minute. He is going to be rendered speechless by your beauty.”
