Safe inside, toasty warm, while water pitter-patters on the roof… describe your perfect, rainy afternoon.

My perfect rainy afternoon, and trust me when I say that this season, we have had our fill of them and they haven’t been perfect, would be knowing that the rain isn’t potentially rotting my plants, overflowing my pool and multiplying the mosquito population. If it were simply an innocent afternoon of rain, then Jack and I would be curled up on the couch, he would be sitting on my lap while I read or type on my iPad, you see my little Jack really dislikes the rain, and he sits on me, I think partly to make sure that I don’t get up and go out into the wet rain. Jack likes it on my lap and as long as my iPad doesn’t crowd him too much, he is the happiest little Jack Russell on the planet. I love my little Jack.

I have been tagged by my mentor and friend Tilly Bud of the Laughing Housewife fame as The Next Big Thing. It involves bloggers who either have a book under their belt, or are in the process of writing one or should be writing one.

Normally I don’t partake in these award ceremonies, not that I am nominated often, but since this has to do with a book that I am working on, I feel that it will be another shove in the right direction of finishing my book. The rules are simple; answer a few questions regarding your work if it is done or in process or even if it is only in your head and then tag five other bloggers whom you feel are on the book writing path.

Here goes:

What is the title of your book?

The Chic Bootlegger

*

Where did the idea come from for your book?

My great great aunt from Paris, France is famous in our family, on my father’s side, for coming over to New York during Prohibition, making booze and going back home to France with a lot of money.

*

What genre does your book fall under?

Historical fiction

Which actors would you choose to play in your movie rendition?

Madeleine : I  am thinking a French actress who speaks English beautifully so it would be Audrey Tatou

Jack Dempsey :  Viggo Mortenson

Madeleine’s mother : Judi Densh or Catherine Deneuve because she speaks French beautifully

Madeleine’s father : Jean Reno

Madeleine’s best friend Sabine: Juliette Binoche

setting: Paris, France and later New York

*

What is a one-sentence synopsis of your book?

A book of love, romance and adventure set against the most romantic city in the world and ending in the most violent city at the time.

*

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

I will be sending it to publishers in the hope of being published but if I have to; I am ready to do the work necessary to self-publish.

*

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

Two years and counting.

*

What other books would you compare this story to?

There are several, I am sure that are historical in nature but are fictionalized but I don’t know of any based on actual bootleggers who were women.

*

Who or what inspired you to write the book?

The National November Writing Month challenge and the need to write a novel to get it out of my system.

*

*

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

I write a lot about food, cooking and eating.

*

To those who I have picked, please don’t be mad, the interview part is fun.

I used to be a fan because I equated rainy days with lounging and lackadaisical days, however walking the dogs three or four times a day has taken the wind out of that particular sail. I can also say that when the little ones would complain about being bored, that took the fun out of rainy days as well, the curling up with a good book would go right out of the window and entertainment would be the order of the day. I do welcome the rain however because we are sorely in need of it, it has been dry again in the Northeast, so a rainy day or two won’t be frowned upon.

This weekend I have been spoiled, I got to see not one movie but two. Our car needed an oil change and my hubby had the foresight to schedule one for 11:30 this morning. We got there and they took us immediately, my hubby then treated me to a fine breakfast at the conveniently located IHOP across the way on Route 5. My favorite breakfast is normally two eggs over-east with rye toast and two sausage links, at my hubby’s insistence I upped the ante and got the two pancakes on the side to make it a combo. My hubby was happy that I broke the twenty year ban on pancakes. I think that I lost all desire for pancakes after I gorged on them during my pregnancy with my first-born. After breakfast, we went to get our car and it was done, ready to be picked up.

It turned out that as we drove past the movie theater, the new Julia Roberts movie Mirror, Mirror was playing at 1:10 and as we looked at the clock in the car, it just so happened to be 1:00. Hooray for us, it was movie time! My hubby and I really enjoyed Mirror, Mirror. As the evil step-mother/Queen(Julia Roberts) put it so well, it was the fairy tale told through the Queen’s perspective. Julia played the evil Queen so well, she was the perfect amount of sarcastic and snarky tempered with fake charm and the great Nathan Lane served well as a comic foil. Snow-white was played to perfection by Lily Collins, her father is Phil Collins, she is so lovely. The dwarves each had personality and charisma unique to each and everyone of them. In case you hadn’t noticed, I, or I should say, we love movies. We loved this one, it was an escapist movie, a nice fairy tale with a happy ever after.

Movies and Olive Garden

The family unit went out this evening for a movie and dinner at the Olive Garden. The babies like the Olive Garden, unlimited bread sticks and salad. It is a dependable restaurant, no surprises and the portions are large enough to warrant leftovers for the next day, hooray. The movie we saw, just came out, Lockout. The writer and director of the movie Fifth Element, Luc Besson, wrote and produced Lockout. Be prepared for the hero of the movie, played by Guy Pierce, to be daring, cocky, tongue in cheek, reminiscent of Bruce Willis in the Fifth Element and of Die Hard fame. It is a science fiction action movie, set in 2079 and the world of course is slightly different to say the least. What I am saying is that this movie entertained us, kept me hopping in my seat and gave us quite a bit to talk about over dinner. Nothing mind-boggling, just hashing out various scenes that resonated the most with us, which characters we liked, we all agreed that Guy Pierce makes a fine hero, we would watch him in another action role anytime.

TV Commercials

Roll #1 windex-20101116.jpg

What I have noticed over the past few years is that commercials show little respect to the men of the house. Every commercial I see, aimed at the consumer of the family, shows a husband who is clueless and helpless and is lost without the strong, brilliant wife. I sometimes feel bad for husbands who watch these commercials and pay attention because when I pointed it out to mine, he now looks for it and gets annoyed by how stupid these commercial husbands are made out to be.
