Funny how small miracles can happen underneath our noses and we are blind to them, until we open our eyes and find them. I was walking around the back to see what had changed, bloomed and grown, my eyes were drawn to a plant that was out of place and crowding my last healthy hosta along the fence to boot; I thought it was a weed, but no, it’s some variety of tomato plant. The leaves with the fuzzy stems and the smell of the plant tell me it’s a tomato plant, I’m so curious to see what it produces in the coming weeks.

My small crop of wild strawberries comes courtesy of birds or some other wildlife, I didn’t plant these small jewels. They are popping up everywhere in my yard, I don’t mind, they are so very pretty and delicate amidst the other plants.

My bougainvillea is producing so many blossoms, this is the first year I have seen blooms on the tree part of the bougainvillea, normally the blooms have only been on the newer, smaller offshoots. It’s going to be magnificent in full bloom, so very exciting!

There is something so miraculous and cool when nature rewards you with a present. These gorgeous day lilies are a new addition to my garden and I didn’t buy or plant them. They just appeared this year, thanks to the birds I think, could it be something else, wind, chipmunk, squirrel, butterfly or bee? I don’t know and who am I to look a gifthorse in the mouth, mine is not to question but to be thankful, at least in this instance. They are so sleek and elegant, a nice change from the more traditional tiger lilies I have everywhere.

I have more zucchini blossoms. I also bought more vegetable plants, now I have Kohl Rabi, brussel sprouts, celery plus more peppers and tomatoes. My small patch of blackberries are starting to ripen along with my wild strawberries near the pool. Things are happening in the Nichols garden, very exciting.

I’m wishing for Spring to come …..

This morning I woke up abruptly, keep in mind nothing wakes me up, because there was the strangest noise coming through my dream, it was a bird singing outside my window. I closed my eyes again, focusing on the sing song, making sure that it was real, it was. My next  thought was the birds are returning! Spring is coming at last! Hooray for us!

Fast forward a few hours and I am at my mother’s house, outside in the back, busy chopping and clearing the two inch ice carpet that is making getting her car out of her garage very difficult and a bird started serenading me while I was working, I felt like Snow White.

Thank you birds and bumble bees

These are snapdragons that are growing in the gravel on top of the sand filtered septic system. I have never planted snapdragons before and so I looked them up and discovered that they bloom in cooler weather, they are considered a tender perennial so that means that here in the Northeast; they are annuals for all intents and purposes since they enjoy warmer climes as their permanent home. I learned that bumble bees are the chief pollinators and that since I wasn’t the one who planted their seeds, I can only thank the birds for disseminating these seeds, no matter where they landed.

I do like where the snapdragons ended up, I think that the flowers really pop when contrasted against the pretty stones in the gravel bed. It never fails to delight and amaze me how nature works so harmoniously amongst the plant and animal kingdoms; I only wish that we humans could be as harmonious in turn.

Daily prompt: Mutants and Hybrids

If you were one part human, two parts something else — another animal, a plant, an inanimate object — what would the other two parts be?

We are actually made up mostly of water which is why when you start a diet, you lose the first three or four pounds so easily, it’s mostly water. The fat reserve is shed much more slowly as we slowly come to realize with a lot of frustration at times.

I was thinking of water because swimming with the dolphins might be fun; but on second thought, our oceans are pretty polluted and the marine life would fare much better if I stayed out of the ocean and put my efforts more towards trying to find ways on land to keep the plastics out of our oceans, banding together with others to keep the oil companies from drilling in the Arctic Circle and in doing that, I would really be honoring our oceans, instead of just playing around with dolphins and sea lions.

So instead I was thinking that even though I wouldn’t want to look like a lizard, being a bit chameleon-like would be pretty awesome; blending into whatever situation you find yourself in; it would be perfect for gardening. I could have a lot of fun with camouflaging myself in the garden, jumping out at the chipmunks, watching Jack try to find me with his trusty little nose. After seeing Raven/Mystique in the X-Men movie, I could imagine all of the different scenarios that being camouflaged would come in handy. I am pretty sure that I wouldn’t take unfair advantage, I would be too busy goofing around innocently with my newfound talent.

The other part would be birdlike; I would love to soar like a hawk or an eagle, flying far and wide, surveying all below me. After seeing how beautiful Angelina Jolie was with her wings, folded neatly behind her shoulders, I figure that I could rock a similar pair of beautiful, strong wings capable of propelling me into the air at a moment’s notice. I know that evolutionary speaking, we weren’t made to soar or coast the wind currents like birds, our bones are far too dense, but a girl can dream.
