Coneflowers and upright phlox are the quintessential August flowers. I love their vibrant colors, their height and especially the way they self-propagate throughout the garden. They are also drought resistant, they haven’t exhibited any signs of distress since the drought started, they are a solid choice for any gardener, beginner or expert.

I love the coneflower’s structure, it is a bee and butterfly magnet with its wide center full of pollen, I would call them the insect world’s drive through, the bees and butterflies come and go without a care, knowing that the coneflower stands tall full of what they need and love more than anything. It’s a beautiful thing to watch, especially all of the different butterflies that come through my garden.

This was my very first rhododendron and she has been through the mill. I bought her, I think, about fifteen years ago and just a few years after that, when we replaced our fence, the fence people put one of the sections right down the middle of my poor rhodie. She wasn’t happy for a long time, but through an unbelievable need to grow and thrive, here she is with several beautiful blossoms that the bees are loving right now.

Here is my rhodie from the other side of the fence, amazing isn’t it? I felt so bad for her those first few years, she was really in a bad way but with the fence, I couldn’t really dig her up to put her elsewhere. I love the purity of the white blossoms with the smallest touch of yellow in the center. It’s almost as if I have two rhododendrons instead of the one.

These are snapdragons that are growing in the gravel on top of the sand filtered septic system. I have never planted snapdragons before and so I looked them up and discovered that they bloom in cooler weather, they are considered a tender perennial so that means that here in the Northeast; they are annuals for all intents and purposes since they enjoy warmer climes as their permanent home. I learned that bumble bees are the chief pollinators and that since I wasn’t the one who planted their seeds, I can only thank the birds for disseminating these seeds, no matter where they landed.

I do like where the snapdragons ended up, I think that the flowers really pop when contrasted against the pretty stones in the gravel bed. It never fails to delight and amaze me how nature works so harmoniously amongst the plant and animal kingdoms; I only wish that we humans could be as harmonious in turn.
