The question is relative to each and everyone. My answer to the question is of a varied type; January is such a dreary month, long and cold and pretty much a let down after the buildup of all of the holiday festivities, so getting rid of all the decorations seems like a lot of work for not very good results. However, that being said I am finding myself eyeing the other homes waiting to see who is taking the initiative first. I sort of don’t want to be the first to say good bye to the holiday cheer. We might also have a visitor this weekend so I would like to keep the cheer going for a little while longer.
I think that I will put off taking down the decorations until next week when it is closer to Martin Luther King Jr’s Day. I’m pretty sure that I will be quite ready to accept the new year clean and tidy and decoration free.
Oh that’s interesting. Here we do’t get a choice, traditionally. There are 12 days of Christmas, and Christmas ends on “Twelfth Night” – so everything had to be gone by something like the 5th/6th.
Is there not some other festival to do with the three kings that comes next? I want to say “Epiphany” but I am not sure.
I recommend the 12th night thing.
Similarly, on your side of the Atlantic, trees go up WAY before ours – because of how it dovetails with Thanksgiving. We maybe get a tree about a week before Christmas.
They shed fewer needles when they are only up for a fortnight or so π
I know the Epiphany one because in France we celebrate it with a special cake, gateaux des rois, puff pastry dough that is circular and filled with an almond pastry cream and there is a fava bean in there, whoever gets the fava bean in their slice of cake is the king and gets crowned for the night. In America since more often than not we use artificial trees it allows one to put it up early and take it down later. Mine is artificial so that is why it can still stay up without drooping. The why an artificial tree is a story for another day π
Sounds like France is the place to be in Early January!
I agree with you there. France has this very distinct habit of making crazy delicious desserts to celebrate all holidays. A good place to be for celebrations.
