Do you celebrate Earth Day?

April 22, 2012

Earth Day

Earth Day

I would like to say that everyday is Earth Day but I know that I am being naive. I signed many petitions today, all in support of environmental causes. I even participated in a Facebook “like” of an environmental organization which got a tree planted in my name, I thought that was exciting.

Hooray, it’s raining! I am relieved for many reasons, many wells up here in the mountain were getting awfully low in water, the potential for wild fires was steadily increasing and our gardens were looking sad and droopy. Bad enough that we didn’t have any snow from this past winter, this spring was practically bone dry so what should have been mud season was dust season. This weather phenomena isn’t limited to my neck of the woods, it has extended throughout the whole Northeast region plus the Central Plains and even the Southeast. I don’t know if this unfortunate weather pattern will start to change the climate change deniers minds, I hope that they don’t attribute this state of events as a fluke. I hope that this will finally be accepted as proof that we all need to come together and work toward the common goal of finding alternative ways to use and store energy such as solar and wind energy.

Bill Maher Blasts Republicans Over Pink Slime (VIDEO)

Growing up with Reagan, I was 13 when he was elected, the prevailing “wisdom” was that the GOP was the party of the businessmen and the democrats were the party of civil rights and welfare. I remember feeling a pull towards the democrats because they were in my young mind doing good for those less fortunate but I remember having respect for the GOP because they were smart in things pertaining to the economy. Reagan changed all that for me, I lost respect at that time for the GOP, because even then at 13, I sensed a shift in the wind of the ideology of the GOP and I knew that it was wrong for the country. I had arguments about it and in hindsight I was right on target. I had no idea how prescient I was though and that the transformation of the GOP would never be checked and 40 years later it has become unrecognizable from before the days of Reagan. The GOP have painted themselves into a corner of lunacy. I don’t see how they can right their trajectory, they have repeated their own history of the 1840’s.It will be interesting what new party will come of the old caterpillar.

What Money Can’t Buy: The Skyboxification of American Life

When I saw the word skyboxification, I immediately thought of the movie Hunger Games and the sharp contrast between the ultra rich and the rest of the districts. We are a nation of gated communities penthouse living, private school campuses of the wealthy minority living separately from the rest of us. This didn’t come about from market mechanisms in a vacuum. This happened over the past 4 decades through government tax policy, financial deregulation and corporate decision making that tied C.E.O pay to stock performance and not to their own job performance. The adulation of Wall Street in terms of measuring our economy’s success which generated increased concentration of its economic and political power meant that our best and brightest were seduced by Wall Street riches and the rest of our industries were neglected. Our nation intellectual and creative minds were hijacked, and we need to turn the tide or we will continue down this path of ultra wealthy living parallel, yet separately from the rest of us. That isn’t a nation, it’s occupying similar a geographical location that’s it. The public weal needs to be nurtured once again, it has suffered greatly under the GOP philosophy. We need to remember how good governance works, such as the Sherman Anti-trust act, the passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Act, the National Highway System, Social Security and Medicare, these acts of government were for the public weal and they are proof of good governance.
