Weather is normally a subject taken up by strangers or acquaintances when there is nothing else but small talk. This past week, in terms of weather normalcy, is that there isn’t any normalcy. We are in March in Western Massachusetts, in Blandford at an elevation of 1400 feet and it has been in the 50’s all this week and part of last week. This coming week, according to the weather forecasters, it is going to be in the 60’s and 70’s. Like I said, this is March, it is not normal. My poor plants, my tulips, my irises are coming up way before they are supposed to, I am just hoping that Mother Nature doesn’t play a cruel joke and plunge us into freezing weather and kill my spring plants before I have a chance to see them in bloom. Please Mother Nature, be kind and don’t tease us. This warm weather has been a balm to my grey mood and now that I have the good news from the doctor’s I would love to continue with my sunny disposition while basking in the warm, mild weather.

Waste not, want not.

A Wasteful Habit

Soap Opera in the Kitchen, after Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin

I have always kept the t.v on all day and night. I have done this ever since I had the babies simply to hear adult voices in the background. I got consumed once again with the soap operas over the years when the babies were tots but with soap operas, I found that if my life was stressful I could not watch them because I couldn’t take stressing over their lives on top of the stress I was feeling in mine, so I left soap opera land for a while. I have gotten back into General Hospital but there are days when I am fast forwarding a lot. I think it stems from being alone all these years with my hubby on the road 5 days at a time, other adult voices were a comfort.

It is of no surprise to see the GOP vote no, in light of the language change in the bill to include even more disenfranchised groups. The GOP doesn’t see the bill in terms of a pro-woman bill but rather in the terms of the “other” group bill and just more protections and more money for the “other” which I am sure makes their blood boil. The GOP has now adopted an all out war against the “other” and the “other” is whatever group who is not white, protestant/christian and male. The GOP is going to shrink and the greater the shrinkage the more outrageous they will become in order to hold on to the remnants of a society that they have enshrined in their collective mind even if, in the real world, it no longer exists.

I realize that the goal of the tea party republicans is to, what Grover Norquist likes to say “Shrink the government to the size where you can put it in a bathtub and drown it”, but what I really think that these tea party politicians and constituents do not fully understand, is just how much our government does in our daily lives and how integral our government is to our success both as a country and as individuals. They should all go live in those towns in states like Michigan where due to tax cuts and cuts in spending, there is less police, fire fighters and common services, or to other communities losing health care services, libraries and other important services. I would be curious as to how well read these tea party people are and how intellectually curious they are as well. I have known successful individuals who hadn’t gone to college but every single one of those individuals were extremely well read and expressed curiosity in all fields and about all cultures. They had also high levels of critical and analytical thinking which I think were really the basis of their success, not accepting everything at face value and searching for the best understanding of any issue or problem before them. Those are qualities that I wish that our lawmakers possessed.
