Tonight we are watching the Oscars, it is a yearly event. This year we haven’t seen all the movies, but I watch really for the fashion; not who wins or loses, because I think that if you are lucky enough and talented enough to make it all the way to the Oscars, you can’t consider yourself a loser even if you walk away without a statuette.

So far I haven’t seen a dress that was ugly, there were two that I would consider bland only because of the color, not the cut or the design. Picking out a fabulous dress can be challenging because so many things have to be considered; the fit, the cut, the fabric, the detailing, the colour and the design.

Look at me, writing as if I really know anything about fashion. I do know what I like to look at, but it has to do more with architectural details of gowns than the thought of wearing a gown. I like haute couture and how the cut of a dress can dramatically affect the way it drapes a woman’s body and I admire that because it takes talent, artistic precision and dexterity and vision.

I am going to settle in and enjoy the show, I’ll give a review tomorrow.

In terms of the gas price question, the answers given by all the republicans, just highlight how incompetent and ignorant they are, when it comes to economics and energy policy. Gas prices are barely determined by supply and demand these days, if they were, the prices were be lower because we get the majority of our oil from Canada and Mexico and our demand has gotten lower over the years due to the recession and better, more fuel efficient cars. The futures markets is a key player in manipulating the price of oil and I wouldn’t be surprised if the Wall Street players weren’t artificially jacking up the oil futures market to make it more painful and difficult for President Obama this election cycle. That and the hawkish rhetoric aimed at Iran and their response is making the Straits of Hormuz a volatile place. It is far easier to place the whole blame on our President rather than have a reasoned discussion of our energy policies, but am I surprised? No, it is far easier to press for more domestic drilling regardless of the environmental consequences than to promote any long term investment into alternative green energy technologies. The republican party has become a party of looking backwards and the progressives have become the future planning segment of the political spectrum. I hope that their voices will not only be heard, but listened to as well.

Rick Santorum: Obama Is ‘A Snob’

What I find objectionable about Santorum’s remark that “Obama is a snob” is that he has taken something said by our President and twisted it into something completely negative and designed to further depress the American people. President Obama, like most common sense driven Americans, was speaking to the fact that it is only right that all young people have the opportunity to be able to go to college if they should choose to do so. When he said that everyone should have the right, the right meant opportunity, not that everyone must go to college. President Obama was speaking to the future competitiveness of our workforce and furthermore how is going to college a “snob” thing? College is a place of learning, not only about your prospective field, but about yourself and the world at large. How can that be bad? Education and learning isn’t about snobbery, it is about expanding your worldview and giving you the tools necessary to navigate the outside world. How is that a bad thing? Does Santorum advocate that everyone not strive for more education? That wouldn’t be good for our country, we need more educated young people, our drop out rates are too high, we need to work on that and push our young to want to go onto higher education.
