The hubby, the baby girl and I spent a tremendous day together visiting the dual campuses of Becker College. My daughter did her own research and had decided early in the school year that Becker College was her absolute first College choice. She found that Becker was the perfect school because it had concentration programs in Equine Studies and Veterinary Tech Studies, both areas that she is passionate about for her career choices. She worked very hard this year at her grades, studied for the SAT’s, she did alright on them and she wrote a tremendous college essay. She put her application together with help from her guidance counselor and sent it off quite early in the application cycle. I am so proud to write that she was accepted into Becker College and into the Equine Studies Concentration Program with a merit based scholarship. She was almost as proud of herself as I was, I was so happy for her and for the boost that her self-esteem received when she opened that acceptance letter.

Becker College located in the Worcester area has two campuses, one in Worcester the city, hence the “urban campus” which is home of the design programs, the nursing programs, the criminal justice programs and the gaming design programs. The campus located in the rural town of Leicester, only six miles away, is home to the Veterinary Tech Studies program and the Equine Studies programs. The two campuses offer two distinct living arrangements. The Worcester campus even while being in the city is still located in the residential section of Worcester and the dormitories are all located in renovated Victorian homes. For an urban campus, it feels very safe and collegial. The Leicester campus is rural and the quintessential New England campus, historic buildings covered with ivy and the dormitories are also located in beautiful renovated Victorian homes.

Becker College is a tiny 4 year college of 1800 students, the ratio of student to Professor is 16 – 1 and what really blew the hubby and I away is how seriously the campus police are about student’s safety. If a student is studying at the library until midnight and feels scared to walk home alone, a phone call to the campus police will get you an escort back to your dormitory and they are happy to provide you with that escort. My hubby didn’t believe it so he went to visit the campus police to ask them a few questions and he came back very satisfied with their answers. They are actual police officers who have the right to arrest and patrol and they will if there is cause on campus. They do not like to see young ladies walking alone at night and will give them a ride back to their dormitories or where ever they need to be. As a parent that makes us feel very good regarding the safety of our baby girl.

We were impressed with every aspect of the campus both the urban one and the rural one,we were also taken with the stables and the barns that housed all the horses at the school. Their Veterinary clinic was also something that impressed us as well especially learning that as soon as sophomore year, students are required to do their clinical rotations for their class credits and work experience.

All in all it was a wonderful day.

My Most Treasured Possession

my stamp collection book opened

I have a small stamp collection that my grandfather started for me when I was six. He saw that I was intrigued by my cousin’s collection and I remember watching my grandfather put on his Sunday best and walk off to the bus to go into the city, Bordeaux, and upon his return, he presented me with two beautiful stamp collecting books and a starter bag of stamps. The sentimental value of those two books is priceless.
