A Change I Should Make

281/365 – pop the bubbly.

Right now, it would be for my husband to have job security with his potential new position until the day he retires which would be in 20 to 25 years from now. That would be a wonderful thing that would make me very happy and it would make the big guy very happy as well. The potential new position will be solidified on Feb. 20th so we are keeping our fingers crossed.

movie review, postaday2012

The hubby and I went to the movies and we saw Chronicle. We saw the previews and of course we were intrigued because the previews showed three young men exposed to something and then they show telekinetic powers. Needless to say we were excited about seeing the movie, science fiction is our favorite genre. The movie was not what we had expected. It wasn’t bad, not at all. The movie was a sober look at how unexpected power put into the hands of a young teenager of 17 who feels like an outsider, socially awkward and physically abused at home can have horrific consequences.

The title itself, Chronicle, refers to the video camera that the protagonist Andrew carries with him at all times during the movie to the consternation of everyone around him. Andrew is intent in chronicling the events that happen to him, as a result of his actions and the people who make up the players in his life. The video camera itself becomes a source of tension in the story.

The telekenetic powers that manifest themselves in the three boys aren’t dangerous in and of itself. It is the users of the power who are ultimately accountable in the story. The powers also do not fundamentally alter the personalities of the boys, again the source of the moral turmoil in the story is; what does one do with powerful gifts when one has always felt diminished by others, parental authority figures, peers and bullies or abandoned by those who should be involved as source of comfort.

It wasn’t what we had expected, we had thought that we were in for an hour and a half of escapist fun science fiction, instead we got a movie that made you feel, think and feel sad for an unhappy abused young man who was given access to powers that he was ill equipped to handle.

The hubby and I liked the movie, we were even discussing what a sequel would look like, because the creators of the movie left a few doors open and a few questions left unanswered, so that you can see a second movie in the making, it all depends of course on how well the first one does at the box office.

Paul Ryan: Obama’s Contraception Revision ‘An Accounting Trick’

What is wrong with this alleged controversial issue, I’ll tell you. It is government and religious institutions getting in the way of a woman’s reproductive health. Speaking as a woman I strongly resent having men trying to dictate and make it more onerous for me to have access to contraceptive methods if I so decide that it works for me. This also speaks to economic decisions for a woman and also society, less fortunate women if they are having difficulty affording contraception will have even more difficulty affording an unplanned pregnancy. Moreover as the GOP has effectively declared class warfare on poor people, those larger poor families have less assistance thus condemning more families to homelessness, bad educational outcomes and severe food insecurity. How is that a plan for the American future? This whole issue is a distraction to the real question at hand, with the economy on the mend, albeit slowly and still fragile, the GOP has nothing to offer on the economic platform so they have reverted to the social issues, note that for women it is turning back the clock to the early 20th century.

Sarah Palin CPAC Speech Drowns Out Occupy Protesters

Why don’t people see her for what she is, an opportunistic, negative bully. She speaks about the constitution and the horrors of what the government and the political establishment have done to the constitution. She doesn’t contribute anything worthwhile, she tears down and criticizes instead. It is so easy to sit on the sidelines and criticize. It is also easy to read speeches and throw pot shots but when it comes to doing the actual work, all we hear from the Sarah Palin camp is the sound of crickets. I personally would like it if Sarah Palin would simply fade away, she is part of the GOP divisiveness, the one that says that the east coast elites aren’t real Americans, the west coast elites aren’t either, basically she thinks that the heartland of America is the only place where you find real America. We are all real Americans, different in so many ways except for the thing that binds us, we are all part of this country, for good and bad.

Mitt Romney Backed Earmarks As Governor

The GOP is running on two platforms; 1. the social conservative platform designed to bring us back to era circa 1950’s and 2. the fiscal conservative platform where government is supposedly rendered small enough to drown in a bathtub. The only Americans who might miss the 1950’s are the white males of our population, they had it pretty good during that era, the rest of us not so much. The second point about squeezing the government’s size into something small is good for those who don’t need some kid of assistance. The GOP’s current vision of slashing the tax rate for corporations, the higher income brackets, eliminating capital gains taxes and estate taxes means lowest levels of revenue for the government thus effectively diminishing the government’s ability to regulate, enforce, invest or do much of anything. Most of the government’s services would be outsourced to the private sector which to the GOP mentality automatically makes it better. I don’t understand how they think that way but they do. The GOP serves two gods, the God of their church and the free market, they might get upset by my assertion but if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck it’s a duck. The GOP really does worship at the altar of the free market, they have an undying faith in its infallibility and its all knowing wisdom.
