My vacuum of 17 years died recently, it was a remnant of the olden days when vacuums were made from very solid and heavy materials. I had to let the “silver pig” go the way of all obsolete appliances, it could no longer be resuscitated and goodness knows I have taken the silver pig apart so many times over the years, I could have qualified as a mechanic at this point. Alas, nowadays vacuums no longer come with durable parts, everything is plastic, as I came to find out when I took the Eureka vacuum out of the box.
It is an upright vacuum so you would think that it is more or less in one piece but no, the handle needed to be attached and the other small plastic parts that hold the hose which itself has to be snapped on, that didn’t illicit much confidence in the vacuum when I had finished assembling the vacuum. All the pieces made of plastic had to be snapped on, when something snaps on it stands to reason that it can then snap off, which two pieces did while I was vacuuming. All in all it did a decent job, I did hit a few snafu’s during the virgin run of the Eureka, I had to unclog the hose, the vacuum shut itself off when it felt that the canister was overfilled with dog hair, I do recognize that the automatic shutoff is a good safety feature. I did have to break out the screwdriver because 3/4 of the way through the first floor, the rug beaters weren’t turning anymore and I went to the manual that came with a spare belt and the manual suggested that the belt could have snapped which, after I undid the four screws of the casing, was the case. So all I had to do was lift the rod, slip the belt into place, re-screw the casing and I was able to finish the first floor, do the stairs and completely vacuum the upstairs, all four bedrooms and the bathroom. The upright does go smoothly from bare floor to various carpet heights and it does go from floor vacuuming to tool vacuuming very easily as well. I’m not as impressed as I’d like to be but my former vacuum was an exceptional piece of machinery and quite expensive. I didn’t feel that the expense was something that we should do right now. I’ll be fine with Eureka, like I said, I’m practically a licensed vacuum mechanic.
