Serious Novels

My resolution is not solely limited to New Year's, my goal for the past month and a half is to finish writing this novel that I started by accepting a 50,000 word writing challenge in November. I successfully completed the challenge of writing 50,000 words on November 28th but I am nowhere near the end of the story so I have decided to have this as my goal; to finish my story no matter how long it takes. I aim to write every day, even if it's only a paragraph. I am not going to give up.

Why is it so hard to admit a mistake?

mistake, postaday2011

There are many reasons why it is so hard, the ones that come to mind are fear of being yelled at and/or punished, fear of losing the trust of others, fear of having people see you as how you see yourself. As I go on, I am realizing that the common denominator is fear, the differences revolve around how the fear is directed or produced.

I used to hate admitting my mistakes, actually I hated making a mistake more than having to admit to it. I would get angry with myself and I know now that the anger was really the fear that perhaps I wasn’t good enough and that perhaps I wasn’t capable to the task at hand and I was simply kidding myself and others. I couldn’t tell you exactly when I outgrew that fear and when I started to give myself a break, but it’s been a few years. It is a relief and very liberating. I make a mistake, it’s not intentional, there is never any malice on my part, so if needed I rectify it, apologize if needed and we all move on. Life is too short to dwell on mistakes, the real issue is how we treat ourselves and others. I do my best to focus on that.

America Must Not Back Down on Sustainable Energy

Unfortunately big oil and coal have been around for far too long and are so deeply entrenched in the pockets of congress as is the financial industry that it is going to take us, the people, to fight very long and very hard to help put the green industry on the map. It took the 2008 economic meltdown to wake up the middle class to the horrible truth that we as the majority of people were sliding backwards while the 1% were raking in all the benefits, it was only because the illusion of middle class wealth disappeared right before our eyes, the housing bubble, credit card as our supplementary income, with the instant disappearance of 8 – 10 million jobs that we are aware of how unequal our economic society really is and has been since the eighties. It is the same with the green industry, the 1970’s was a wake up call over oil and OPEC, once the prices dropped back down we were lulled into thinking it was over, it wasn’t againuntil we woke up during the financial crisis that we realized that we had blindly let an opportunity pass us by in the 70’s. We can no longer let our opportunities pass us by, we must be vigilant and more engaged, with demanding more regulation on Wall Street, break up the big banks, bring back manufacturing to the U.S, address our trade imbalance with China and pursue aggressive green technologies.

Boehner Blasts Obama On Keystone XL, Despite White House Acceptance Of Deal

What about environmental disasters does no one understand? First off this pipeline is not for domestic usage, it is going down to Texas to the refineries in the duty free zone to be delivered internationally. Which is why it is up to the State department and the President to decide, if it were for domestic consumption than the congress would be responsible. The amount of jobs generated by the Keystone pipeline is low compared to the environmental fallout that the project will cause down the heartland of America. If the Canadians want to pollute their own backyard and pipe their dirty tar sands oil directly to China than so be it, we need to stand strong and say no, the climate science is real and taking the easy way out is with dirty oil is truly kicking the can down the road. We need to buck up, take the bull by the horns and commit to green energy, that is where all the future jobs are.

Government Spending Bill Passed By Congress As Democrats Declare Victory

I am especially glad for the continued funding of the E.P.A, with the increased GOP call for drilling be it tar sands or natural gas with its extremely polluting fracking, we are going to need the E.P.A more than ever. Why did the GOP go all out for the incandescent light bulb? I know that Michele Bachmann made it her mission to save the light bulb but the whole moving forward to newer lighting technologies was done under the Bush administration so why does it feel like we are going backwards? So this was the great omnibus bill, I just pray that the democrats can come back with good news and tell us that the President held strong and said no to the Keystone pipeline.

Best friend, postaday2011

I’ve known my oldest and best friend since the age of seven I believe, but we didn’t start being best friends until we were twelve. After that we were inseparable. We had so much to talk about, that even after we spent all afternoon together, we spent an hour or two on the phone at night talking about what we were going to do the next day, what we had for homework, how we were doing in school and of course boys. The subject of boys at that age was what really drove our conversations, we cared about school and our responsibilities towards school but it didn’t compare to the importance of boys in our discussions. We dissected every nuance regarding how a boy looked at either one of us, if he spoke to us, what he said or didn’t say, if a note was passed, what was written on it or not written on it and the potential meaning of it all. The requisite answer to the note or if we should even respond to it. There were so many things about boys to figure out, talk about and get mad about. Those conversations were real bonding periods because they meant so much to us and we trusted each other with our most private hopes, insecurities, dreams and of course first loves, broken hearts, bouts of jealousy, the whole range of emotion that runs through a young girls emotional life. It makes for an intense friendship and that is what I shared with my oldest and best friend. To this day, I know that I can go to her with anything and that she would listen and that would be enough, I know that my feelings would be safe with her and the same goes for her, if she ever needed me for anything, I would be here for her to listen and do what I did for her all those years ago.

Dairy vs. Meat

fresh milk

It would be so much harder to give up dairy than meat. As of right now, I hardly eat meat, I eat fish and a lot of vegetables and fruit. I can't imagine not eating yogurt, or having milk with my cereal, not eating cheese or never eating ice cream again. The choice really is simple, dairy over meat.
