Studying all night…

The worst was always the forced all night study session all because I had put off reviewing the material as a responsible student should, I, of course thought that it would be more fun going out instead of studying.

France, Grandmother, House calls, postaday2011

As I’ve written about in the past, I spent all my childhood vacations at my grandparents house in Bordeaux, France. It was the family home and I was very lucky to experience the whole extended family dynamic. I learned a lot patience and all about sharing growing up being a part of a larger household. It was wonderful. My sister and I were the little ones from far away America and we were the progeny of my grandparents baby girl, my mother, our visits were always highly anticipated. We were so blessed, my sister and I.

Since I spent at least 3 months overseas every year, the odds of me are not getting sick would have been crazy. I have to admit that after the first time of being ill in France, it seemed that I saved all my illnesses to develop in France because I found out, shockingly enough, that you don’t get stuck with needles when you’re sick. That is a huge deal when you are a child. Even better, whenever I or anyone else in the family were ill, my aunt would telephone Docteur Duporter and he would come right over with the trusty medicine bag in hand. House calls, trust me, are nothing to dismiss, being sick in the U.S means getting dressed, getting into the car and being miserable in the waiting room, waiting to be seen, first by the nurse and then by your doctor. The whole time you are miserable in the car, in the waiting room and then back in the car, waiting at the pharmacy. Now in France, I spent all my time in bed with Docteur Duporter coming to see me, examining me and then filling out the prescriptions which were filled at the pharmacy down the street and picked up by my aunt. All the while, I’m laying in bed resting and my wonderful grandmother would bring in a huge amount of children’s books. My grandmother would also take it upon herself to bring me my meals in bed and she would make me her famous rice pudding. She should have been a nurse, she was never happier than when you were laying in bed, not too sick where it was dangerous, but sick enough to want to be doted on with being read to, being fed all of your favorites and your grandmother stroking your head saying “oh, my poor little baby, Mamie is going to make you all better, my little baby girl, Mamie loves you”. Grandmothers are a gift, mine certainly was.

I am not exaggerating in the least, when I am describing how much nicer it was being sick in France. I had my grandmother and my aunt at home ready to make sure that I didn’t want for anything. At home in the States, my poor mother would be stressed because she wouldn’t want to miss work and would have to juggle the doctor’s appointment with her work schedule. She would also be stressed about leaving me home alone, taking my medicine at the proper intervals and the like. I wonder if that didn’t influence me in the subconscious and cause me to save up my illnesses for France because I promise you that I was ill every summer for at least a good solid two weeks during the summer and never sick during the school year.

gratitude. =)

My children, my life, my family, my husband, my friend, my dogs. I know that they are listed, it would seem in order, but it's not really an order. They are each and every bit as important to me and I'm grateful for them all.

Obama Healthcare Plan: Justice Department Joins States In Call For Prompt Review Of Law

I would like the review be done as quickly as possible because the uncertainty is definitely troublesome. That being said, I support the Affordable Patient Act, it has done away with pre-existing conditions and as a cancer survivor, that is huge for myself and millions like me. Also keeping my son on our insurance plan until he turns 26 is another tremendous benefit. I have to say that the insurance companies have really taken advantage of the delay in implementation of the law because since the discussion has started in this country, premiums have gone up each year. Personally, I would love to see the Supreme Court decide that to have people across the board buy into private health insurance is wrong but that medicare for everyone is fine and take the profits out of the equation. That would be a home run for us as a country. The only reason for the mandate is to get all of us on the insurance roster so that it decreases premiums, if it was medicare for all with no profits to account for, our long term deficits would be lessened greatly, a boon to us but not for the poor health care insurance industry, I forgot about them, oh well, them’s the breaks.

The Republicans Continue to Wage War Against Government Workers

29 Thursday Sep 2011

Let’s see, how has the GOP done so far with solving the country’s problems? They all ran on a JOBS platform in 2010, once in office they have not done a single thing about creating jobs but they have done a bang up job in eliminating them. As Bob has stated so well, government jobs have people attached to them. By downsizing the government job force they are contributing to the unemployment rolls and taking vital paychecks out of the economy weakening it even further. Moreover, by choosing to treat the country’s debt ceiling and budgets as economic weapons, they are contributing to the further economic decline and also to the country’s deficit because all this economic brinksmanship costs the tax payers money. On a separate note, the GOP, by striking at different parts of the budget such as disaster relief or green technology programs and using those as pressure points to weaken President Obama’s plans to help the country is horrible because once you start digging, you find out that people like Cantor and McConnell are manipulating serious issues for their own political benefit. Cantor behind the scenes calling FEMA to expedite monies to his district, meanwhile publicly holding out for spending cut off sets, McConnell yelling about Solyendra and deals made behind closed doors, yet he has called the D.O.E for expedited loans for his own pet projects such as ZAP, a company with its own financial problems.

Is there anything you wouldn’t say to your best friend?

Best friend, postaday2011

No, there isn’t anything that I wouldn’t tell my best friend. The only thing that I would not share with my best friend would have to be either, so shameful or so illegal, that I wouldn’t want to make her an accomplice after the fact, or that she would never be able to look at me the same way. But I really can’t see that ever happening because that isn’t who I am.

In terms of clothing choices, hair choices, man choices, I would and have always been honest with my best friend because that is the whole point of being best friends, if you don’t say the truth or get the truth, than who else is going to be that for you?

The whole relationship between best friends is based on love, trust and honesty. Much like what defines a marriage except for the sexual dynamics and what goes along with that. It’s a relationship that allows for fearlessness and feelings of safety. This relationship is very important and can never be underestimated of its special place in probably every person’s life.

On Luck

Blair’s Lucky Charms

Yes I believe in luck, every success story has a huge aspect of luck attached to it. I firmly believe in hard work, studying, a strong work ethic but if you don't have the blessed addition of luck, you theoretically should do well but it's not a guarantee. Luck needs to be in the mix and I think that everyone who has had success will agree.

The Third Industrial Revolution: How Lateral Power Will Transform Society (Excerpt)

As I’ve said before this is exactly what has been going through my mind but I lacked the proper words to verbalize it. The U.S with its different regions is perfectly set up for lateral economic sharing of sustainable energies and even more ways to adapt to a new industrial process. These ideas are what we should be hearing about at the presidential debates. A look to the future and not the past, we like a hobbled horse limping along when we could be a new energy efficient small vehicle dashing along to the hum of future development. President Obama needs a new book to read and not any former President’s biography, he should be reading Rifkin’s book and using it to continue to shape his vision even further with more hope and change that would work across the board in the continental sense that Jeremy Rifkin espouses so eloquently in his book.

Book/Movie Genres I Didn't Expect to Like

Demi Moore by David Shankbone 2010 NYC

This question is making me realize that either I'm set in my ways or that I'm easily pleased. The books and movies that I tend to be attracted to don't disappoint. Maybe I'm lacking in curiosity, it has been a very long time since I've put a book down or not enjoyed a movie. My husband and I actually own the video of Demi Moore's movie Strip Tease, we tried, I mean we tried but to this day we have never seen the movie in it's entirety, that's how bad it is as a movie. A sad confession, you are welcome.

Super Committee’s Cuts Anything But Automatic

27 Tuesday Sep 2011

This has been stated over and over again by so many commentators, just because the word “super” is put before congress or committee doesn’t mean that the entity made up of exactly the same people in the “normal” will do anything differently. The congress seems to think that they are fooling us into thinking that they are working really hard for our interests, when in reality, they are spending all their time making back room deals with companies, lobbyists and rich donors, carving up wealth while the average person is scrounging around looking for a job, or if they have one, desperate to keep it and begging for more hours. Are these congresspeople feeling as overwhelmed as I am by the amount of problems there are to be fixed? The housing and underwater mortgage situation, the honest percentage of unemployment 17%, student loan bubble, more natural disasters coming, fossil fuel crisis, our failure to be competitive in new technology and the third industrial revolution and the list goes on. Aside from progressives who want to engage the new century head on, I don’t see the GOP speaking to a future, they seem to want to go back to circa 1900 i.e Ron Paul and his ilk.
