Differences and similarities: which divides us more?
That is such a good question. It made me think of the former nation state of Yugoslavia and the long standing feuds between the Croats and the Serbs. How different are they really? On the flip side, how very similar are they? I don't think that answer nowadays would matter in so far as it probably would have minimal effect on the deep seated hatred between the two ethnic groups. I am also thinking of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. As two ethnic groups; they share many similarities; their languages are similar, their ethnic look is similar, they share cultural history and geographic history, their foods are similar. It is the question of religion and long ago fighting over a piece of land that divides them. We are still waiting for them to come to any kind of resolution that doesn't involve war.
The question is far too complex; many similarities often cannot overcome the one huge difference between two people, so an appeal to common ground doesn't work. I wish that it could be so simple, our world would be a much better place for it.
